The famous Tamboo Bar and Grill, located at Beside
The Pointe Beachfront Guest House, is a beach lover's paradise and a great place to eat and drink.
You can spend the entire day on
Sandy Beach, swimming, surfing, kayaking, snorkeling or just
laying on the sand, with no concern about having to pack-up and go
elsewhere to eat and drink. We had a bowl of mussels, in a delicious garlic
sauce that was so tantalizing, we went back the next day for more.
The hamburgers at Tamboo are legendary. The Tamboo lunch and
dinner menus include fish, pasta and many other tasty dishes that will satisfy any appetite. The
atmosphere is very laid back and Javier and Mori (the cool, young
new owners) are always around to make sure that everything is
running smoothly. They love to meet people, so ask for them when you
walk in.
Dinner at El Molino
del Quijote, in Barrero, is unique and
delicious. We recently had
a dorado (mahi-mahi) stuffed with lobster, in a butter and
garlic sauce. Simply put, it was a triumph. Our appetizer consisted of
chorizo slices in a tangy Spanish sauce and surullos
(fried corn meal sticks). The service was excellent and the price was
great. Our table was situated on the old coastal railroad bed, which
gave us a spectacular view of the Mayagüez coastline and mountain
lights. While enjoying our dinner, we were entertained by nature
as we listened to the gentle waves and watched a light show, provided
by distant clouds at sea.
Our
Rincon dinner experiences have ranged from the sublime, in a natural
setting, to the depths of disappointment, in a wood-paneled
environment. Let's talk steak: We do have delicious steak in
Rincon. You just won't find it at a local steak palace called
The Outlaws Steak House. Our sad experience there began in the
poorly-lit parking lot, where while avoiding a power line pole that
stands in the very middle of the lot, our rental car bumped into
its invisible support cable (seen emerging from the patch of grass
in the photo). When we decided that the cable and the pole had stopped
shaking enough, and that the transformers were not going to drop on
our hood, we parked in an adjacent lot.
We were greeted
by the host, who later turned out to be our server and bartender. He
sat us at a leaning table, with very uncomfortable wood
chairs. When we mentioned our parking lot experience to the
host/server/bartender, he smiled and told us that it happens all the
time.
We asked for
the best steak in the house and were told that it was the "aged
New York Strip". We ordered drinks, a table-side prepared Cesar salad
and scalloped potatoes, which were featured on the menu. We were told
that the potatoes and the salad were not available. As our trepidation
increased, our tepid drinks and water (served in wine glasses)
were placed on the leaning table, with no coasters or cocktail
napkins. Soon enough, the glasses started to slide towards the lower
edge of the table. Moving was not an option, all the other
available tables were also listing. When I rescued the glass
closest to the brink, I noticed something swirling at the bottom,
besides whisky and soda. We realized that the drink had
been served in a dirty glass.
Our salad was
conventional and when the steaks were served, the waiter
unceremoniously lifted our salad plates and placed them on a table
directly in front of ours, which became the depository of all of
our dirty dinnerware. The steaks came with a eight inch thyme
sprig, planted right in the middle- maybe as a reminder to avoid the
power line pole on the way out. I had ordered my "aged beef"
medium rare. What I observed on my plate was a thin, fat-laden
piece of meat that was probably purchased at a local store, before
being committed to the freezer. One side was rare and the other was
over-cooked. We paid our $94.00 check (a $12.34 tip had been
automatically added) and quickly left, making a mental note to always
steer clear of the The Outlaws Steak House.
Editor's Note:
Before this review was published, we tried to contact the management
of this establishment, on the chance that that it was completely off-night. Our efforts were unsuccessful. We understand that it is now
under different management.
